The Orange Regional Museum will interpret the stories, cultures and places of the region, displaying historical artefacts that trigger memories, engage audiences and inspire new ways of thinking about history and cultures. The Museum will include both temporary and `permanent’ exhibitions, as well as a back of house area for loading and unpacking exhibitions, and exhibition preparation. The public spaces will accommodate a visitor information centre, within the foyer, and a cafe and outdoor areas.

The Orange Regional Museum will enhance the vibrant cultural precinct already established, with exciting spaces for exhibitions, innovative education and public programs, and collaborative interdisciplinary programs with the gallery, library and theatre.

Orange City Council’s museum program has been working with a Museum Adviser since 2003.  In that time, Orange City Council has greatly increased its funding and support for local collections and the many community and cultural groups that work with the program.

The museum program has successfully delivered a number of acclaimed and highly innovative projects, including the Watermarks exhibition www.watermarks.com.au ; the Fruitful Landscapes exhibition and associated Survey of Significant Landscape Features www.orangesignificantscapes.com.au ; the book, exhibition and website ‘Half a World Away’ www.halfaworldaway.com.au and the exhibition Orange Blossoms; a cultural history of gardening in Orange and district www.orangeblossoms.com.au

Collaboration, sustainability, and improving standards of practice are key values in all the projects undertaken by the museum program.   Council’s exhibition projects help museums to reinterpret traditional museum collections in ways that reach new audiences and address the interests of contemporary visitors.
